NGC 5364 is one of the most perfectly symmetrical spiral galaxies in the sky. Because the spiral arms in objects of this type seem to have been constructed with painstaking care, they are often called “grand-design spirals.” The white spot in the middle of NGC 5364 is the galaxy’s center, or galactic nucleus. The ring that surrounds it, although not visible here, can be seen in the false color image. Such rings are a common feature of spiral galaxies. NGC 5364 has been classified as an Sc type galaxy, since its center sphere is small and the spiral arms—the stars, gas, and dust delineated by the bright spots inside the red bands—are only loosely wound around the galactic center. The bright spots, also
